Got an idea yesterday for a finish update for the barrel on my MVP and my Savage 10FPSR. Since both sit in identically configured LSS chassis' with Vortex Razor II's on them I thought I might do a little paint job to them.

Both guns are basically black barrels and FDE stocks and the sorta burnt bronze-ish of the scopes with black bipods.

So with these (there are minor differences in present appearance to the pics below but nothing big):

To my Savage I was thinking about doing a Texas coral snake finish to the barrel. The chamber end would look like the very end of the tail, the muzzle end just like the muzzle end of the snake:

And then on my MVP I was thinking of a Sonoran coral snake

Like you'd imagine the Texas coral gets up to 2-3ft long. The Sonoran only gets about a foot long. So doing my .223 in Sonoran pattern and my .308 in Texas pattern seems to make the most consistent metaphorical sense.

It'll be easy to do. I still have a shipping sleeve from my last barrel which gives a nice diamond scales pattern. A little masking tape and some FDE and red rattle can and we're there for the Sonoran snake. I'll have to spatter some black paint around on the red stripes for the Texas snake.

    Thoughts?

    O hall YAH !!

It will look wicked cool and might give you a psychological advantage on some of the competition too.

I think it would look pretty good. I just hate the idea of painting my guns with krylon/rustoleum, I'd have to do duracoat or alumahyde.

I did a test run on a parade barrel for a m95 steyr and it looked pretty good so I did a run on the MVP barrel with some rattle can. It turned out well enough that I'm going to go ahead and get it cerakoted like that. The finish won't be cheap so I wanted to see how it would look before dropping the coin. Stripping off rattle can is easy and the paint only costs a few bucks.

    Here's my rattle can mock-up:

Now I need to find a cerakote guy that can do artsy stuff.

Hey chucker, can you ping that place near you and see what they'd charge to do the sonoran coral snake pattern? I'm getting quotes from local shops that seem, frankly, insane.

The barrel is off at the cerakoter now. I found someone in my town that was referred through some benchrest and silhouette shooters I know. He's not super cheap but he's local with a reputation for quality among discerning connoisseurs (read nit-picky pricks). Odder yet, it turns out we run in some of the same circles and I never managed to meet him at a match or event. Who'da thunk? -\_('_')_/- So that should be done in a few days. He dug on the rattlecan job I did even if it was half assed. It was a good proof of concept.

Should get my tube back this week. Then I'm going to drop the barrel for my .308 off and have that done in the Texas coral snake pattern if he did as good as I think he will.

Whelp, didn't get it back yet. Chatted him up and it turned out he lost the lease on his old shop and had to move. Would have been nice to know. Anyway, I'm going to try a different outfit next time. Poor comms only pisses me off. I'm going to try Chuckers place next time.

That blows man! I agree, he should have called you. Stuff happens one can't avoid but be up front and straight with your customers!

Or at least answer the phone when they call. I called twice a week for three weeks with zero response whatsoever. Worst business transaction I've had in years.

And it's done. Took over 3 months to get him to do it and I'm about 50% happy with the results. When he brought it over it was still warm from the oven. Had to take some 0000 steel wool and knock down the high spots from there he obviously removed the stencils.

The only critique I have is that the scales are facing the wrong way. Otherwise, I like it.

My vote would've been Chili Cheese Dog. Pretzel bun, onions, NO STINKIN' MUSTARD!

Ooooh. Ok, so I kinda like the chili cheese dog idea. Wonder if I could actually pull that off?

    Why not ?

Get an airbrush artist to do up the fore end like a bun, the barrel like a two foot long dog with the fixins on top...

Thinking further, that might just end up requiring the optic to get a paint job which I'm not really keen on. That said, I could do the best hot dog ever created by man:

A Dodger Dog with mustard and onion. That would be pretty easy to pull off without painting the scope.

    Nah?
