Background- mostly varmint shooter, always roll my own ammo.

Few years back bought a 5.56 MVP varminter just because, did OK on the factory barrel but not really up to 1/4 MOPD (minute of prairie dog) on long strings. Liked the appeal of using AR mags (converted a Savage LRPV to use AR mags a few years back) because high mag capacity on a bolt action is a plus in a target rich environment.

    First- bed action.

2nd- New barrel. 223 AI (because I didn't have one, and have lots of 223 cases, have 20 Prac, 6x45, 6TCU, etc.). MAJOR improvement. F that asinine NATO chamber.

    3rd- Jard 12oz.

Starting to like it a lot more now.

Never had any issue with misfires, extraction etc. that are commonly reported. Some mags feed better than others (duh).

And trust me on this, I *WILL* find the absolute maximum load the case will handle and be reloadable.

It ain't a horrible design. It ain't a benchrest rifle. It is what it is- its now a viable varminting setup as good as any other I own. Due to the light weight and mag OAL restrictions they are begging to be converted to a 223 based 20 or 17. I should have gone 20 Prac on the MVP.

Widener's had a blowout sale a couple weeks ago, bought a 500ct of 224 40g blitzkings and 500 50g Nosler BT's. I like BK's and NBT's but they sure are proud of them and I'm a cheap bastid. These were 10 cents per (!!!!!) Think I got enough bullets and cases now.

223AI fully formed cases got close to 4200fps but backed it down to 4000-4050 'cause it has the exact same 100 yd POI as the 53vmax fireform load, hell with dialing up and down and sideways, use the grid. Doesn't even pooch the cases at all. 4000fps in a 9 twist = 320,000 RPM. Should splat a PD, I'll find out this weekend. ;) Spin rate really helps the bullet fragment once it hits something. Also tells you when the barrel's getting dirty.

2.260" max OAL is a bit of a drag though. Next barrel is a 20 Prac, AR mag is made for it. Perfect fit no compromise at all in OAL.

At the PD ranch 'somewhere in the TX Panhandle'. Egads they're abundant and dumb this fall. Pull in, dumb one standing there 150 yds away looking at me. 6BR 58g at 3900 took care of that.
223 AI 65 shots 51 hits in an hour. Got the barrel a wee bit warm. Same POI. Works fine. This is the lightest thinnest barrel I have.
40's @ 4K and 325K RPM work OK but like the 53 vmax better. Has same horizontal POI at 300 yds as main 53 load just shoots a couple inches higher, awful convenient. Probably save the 40BK's for something else like the 5.7x28.
