Helped a friend finish out a 16" recently, test shot it with no problems. Smooth runner that needs some break in time. My 10" pistol had an issue, my fault though.

His rifle came in at $900. That got him a lower and two complete uppers sharing a BCG. Both are 16" free floats, one in 5.56 and the other in 300Blk.

Helped my buddy fix a gas block like that once. We cross drilled it and put in a spring pin.

The spring pin has way way more shear strength than piston could generate slamming against the block. Gas block aint moved since. It was a good mod.

I know this is a thread resurrection post. Just an update, now building a 16" 300 black upper for myself. On top of that I bought a barrel dimple jig for use here on out.

IMHO .300blk is real relevant than it was before. They are so popular you can buy the ammo at some Walmart's. I picked up a 50 round box of Magtech 123 grain FMJ.

What barrel did you get and can you show us how the dimple jig works ?

300 Blackout is .30-30 for the AR and bolt rifle world. .30-30 Winchester has gotten many a deer, so nothing to look down on even if it isn't a glamorous round.

    'chucker,

Barrel came from Anderson Rifle, I have several incarnations of them floating around. Absolutely no issues with them and getting some real good accuracy out of them.

Ill see what I can do this weekend on the jig. I have a barrel that needs it done.

Not to be pedantically irritating but closer to 7.62x39. It's not nearly got .30-30 horsepower. The .30-30 has an easy 300fps on the .300blk at any bullet weight. No replacement for displacement still is true and the .30-30 case has a solid capacity advantage over any incarnation of the .223rem case. This brings up an interesting point though. There is such a thing as a 6.8spc that makes true .30-30 performance from an AR mag possible. The 6.8SPC case has the capacity to turn out all the horsey poop of a .30-30 and handles higher pressures so there's even more on tap than a .30-30 can really push except for the matter of bullet weight. The long neck on the old warhorse handles huge bullets without dipping into the powder space so you'll never really get the same performance with heavy bullets unless you cut the throat on the gun just for the heavies. That said, you could get a 200fps velocity gain over a .30-30 and 500fps over a .300blk with 125's if one were to use something like .30HRT (.30-6.8). That's nothing against the .300blk. At least you can buy a box of shells in WalMart.

For performance classification I think that the class that .30-30 is in has a threshold of right around .300 Blk or 7.62X39 like performance and a ceiling of .30-40 Krag-ish performance.

Technically you are correct but it's the closest correlation I could give it. My understanding of the 6.8 SPC capabilities is that is falls somewhere in between the 5.56 and the 7.62 NATO. Whether that equates to .30-30 Winchester, I could not say. Especially since the bullet characteristics between the "pointy" bullet rounds are going to be different from the round nosed .30-30. .30-30 does have the case capacity advantage but loses out because of the blunt bullets. From what I've seen, range and energy roughly translates about the same when looking at the ..300 Blackout and the .30-30 Winchester..

I like the 300 blackout I have 3 of them , 2 gas guns and a bolt action remington which happens to be my favorite. the bolt gun set's you free not being constrained to mag length and other variables of running an ar I can shoot bullets from 90 grain through 240 grain , super-sonic , sub-sonic all on a sesame seed bun . I think it is a crying shame mossberg dont get off their butt and make an mvp in 300 blackout .
